Here are some great ideas to meet men over 40 . You can gain lifelong friends or even meet your Mr. Right.
In order to get a gay social life after 40, you will have to work on it. Unfortunately, some people just do not do it. You have to work on it . You cannot just attend 1 event or meeting and expect a social life. It takes time.
But the good thing is, you will have time to gather ideas and to do some research and set some goals.
What I mean by this, is you need to attend events and join groups just like you joined a private Facebook group.
But unlike the Facebook group, you need to actually meet guys face to face and really participate in events and group settings which is not always easy. It takes commitment and time. To really develop relationships, it can be up to a year.
These are groups and events that work. You need to do two or more to start having a social life. I have tested them and they all work.
Google groups and events in your local area.

Join the Gay Men’s Chorus
By getting involved in the community, you will build a network of friends and maybe a Mr. Right. There are happy hours, event planning where a group of like-minded people can share their thoughts and interests. Many have After 40 social events. Become a volunteer and immerse yourself in your gay culture.
They are available in most large cities and a lot of fun. Some groups do musicals. Some dance, some just sing. There are retreats and lots of social events to meet others in the group. Sometimes, smaller towns will combine with other choirs from other towns. It is a great way of meeting other couples as well as singles. They are always looking for non-singers as well to market and for fundraising.
Example of just a few:

New York City Gay Men’s Chorus – NYC

Join Facebook Groups
There are a number of fan pages and groups on Facebook that are specifically targeted to gay men who are single and relationship-ready and are locale. Type in “gay single dating” into the search box on Facebook and see what’s comes up–lots! Remember the people who are putting themselves out there are doing so with the same motivations that you are–to connect with someone for romance and/ or socialization. The fastest growing subscribers on Facebook are people ages 40 years old and above. Also, you could create your own Facebook page for your locale area. Based on my experience and knowledge, make the face book group a private group so your members feel protected.

Everyday Life
Gay men do the same activities and need to run the same errands as everyone else and the odds of running into one that catches your eye is better than sitting at home alone. This method is especially effective for gay men living in small town. More than likely you will run into another gay man at some point around town at a grocery store or the coffee shop or the car wash or the park. Of course, once you make contact the next step is up to you.
